Pattern | Dojeling Shawl

This is a fast, easy mitered shawl, and the name says it all. Dojeling, an old Tibetan word for “diamond island,” captures the true essence of this design.

Constructed around a central diamond-shaped panel, the shawl is worked in a mitered seed stitch that is easy to master and quick to knit.
OYSTER BAY: Striped diamond with solid wings

The fabric is lighter, less bulky and more refined than garter, so Dojeling adapts to any occasion. Toss one around your shoulders to add a dash of color to an outfit or a bit of warmth on a cool day. Make one for a nursing mother, craft a gift for a friend, or knit a comfort shawl to remind a loved one you care.

Simply select the fiber and color combination that appeals to you, then relax and let your yarn shine: Make it cozy in cashmere, handsome in handspun, sleek in silky blends or warm in wool. Add a fresh, unexpected touch with speckled or variegated yarns. The choice is yours, and this pattern is so versatile, you can't go wrong.

Dojeling features a reversible seamless design worked from the bottom point up, a construction strategy that limits the number of stitches on the needles and makes each stage easy to manage. As an added plus, the wings form crisp, non-curling points and colorwork is a breeze.

WINEBERRY: All-over stripes (solid & variegated yarn)

The pattern is written for the sock/fingering weight yarn of your choice, and it readily adjusts to different weights and multi-stranding. It includes directions for three sizes ranging from shawlette (S) to generous full-sized shawls (M and L). It also incorporates helpful tips, tricks, ideas for modifications and a handy Quick Reference guide to make customization easy.

The clean lines and reversible stitch make Dojeling a pleasure to wear: Just grab it, wrap it and goThe examples shown have been lightly blocked for a blend of drape and coverage, but you can readily increase the size and open the fabric by blocking more aggressively with pins or wires.

Dojeling has a range of features you'll appreciate.

Briefly, the:

  • Mitered seed stitch is easy to execute and produces a drape-y, reversible fabric on the center diamond panel and wings.
  • Colorwork is a snap. Only one color is worked on a row, so you can create a solid, striped, color-block or ombre shawl with equal ease.
  • Components are worked in sections, so your project remains compact for knitting on the go. Finishing is minimal: There's no seaming involved, so just weave a few ends and you're done.
  • Pattern is simple enough for any moderately experienced beginner. Concise but comprehensive, it includes a basic schematic along with directions, stitch counts, yardage and dimensions for three sizes (SML).
  • Quick Reference guide and useful tips and tricks make modifications easy.
  • Yarn choice is yours. Various fingering/sock weight combinations are shownbut both the pattern and stitch accommodate virtually any fiber or weight you might choose.
  • Design is highly adaptable and offers unlimited possibilities. Opt for bright or muted colors, adopt a tone-on-tone strategy, mix solid with variegated or speckled yarns, work each section in a related shade for an ombre effect, or add sparkle with a metallic blend.

Dojeling is the design that launched my addiction to hand knit shawls, so I confess I'm looking forward to seeing the creative combinations you choose to make it uniquely your own.
