Pattern | Wyndfael Mitts

With classic mini-cables and clean unisex lines, the name Wyndfael captures the appeal of these fingerless mitts.

Old English for windfall, bonus or blessing, the Wyndfael design is packed with such possibilities, you may find yourself making mitts for everyone on your knitting list (including yourself)!

Let's start with the basics. The fast, easy twisted stitches create reversible mitts with mini-cables on the front and 2x2 ribs on the back. The cable-rib combination is worked without a cable needle and produces a stretchy, hand-hugging fabric that requires no additional shaping.

Because mitts are worked flat, they're compact, manageable and ideal for knitting on the go. The simple, no-fuss thumb openings also mean mitts can be worn as folded cuffs, gauntlets or wristers for maximum versatility.

Briefly, the:

  • Cable rib stitches are easy to execute, are worked without a cable needle and produce a stretchy reversible fabric.
  • Flat construction keeps work compact and portable, so you can work mitts anytime and anywhere.
  • Elements like accent stripes allow you to tailor each pair to suit your tastes or those of the recipient.
  • Pattern is simple enough for any moderately experienced beginner. It's concise but complete, and includes directions, stitch counts, yardage and dimensions for five sizes.
  • Yarn choice is completely up to you. Written for worsted weight, the pattern readily adapts to other weights and multi-stranding.
  • Design is versatile and unisex, suitable for all ages, and can be worked in different yarns and countless combinations.

With two mini-cable stitches to choose from, you can make a pair of matching mitts or opt for mirrored cables. Use bright shades for a bold statement, muted neutrals for a classic look, saturated jewel tones for a rich appearance, or gradient or ombre shades for a look that's on trend. Finish each mitt with an optional accent stripe for a flash of contrasting color.

Add glitz with metallic yarns, texture with tweeds, or a subtle sheen with wool-silk blends. Select purpose-bought yarn or shop your stash for a singleton skein clamoring for attention.

Versatile, fast and fun, Wyndfael works up so quickly, you can make mitts for family, friends and everyone on your knitworthy gift list.
